Meet some Millbrook people

Steve Peckham - age is not a barrier

Steve Peckham joined Millbrook as a Plant Area Assistant in 2006.

Steve had unsuccessfuly applied to other employers in the area and felt that although he was well qualified his age could be a barrier.

Steve came along to one of our Recruitment Evenings, filled in an Application Form but felt sure he would not be asked to return as “all the other applicants were much younger”. He was wrong!

The Centre Manager at Gravesend had spoken to Steve and seen someone with a passion for plants and a real desire to help customers.

Steve soon joined our staff and currently works 2-6pm weekdays as a valuable addition to our plant area team.

Tracey Bowler - from tinsel to training

Tracey joined Millbrook in 1995 initially for just six weeks to help set up the Christmas department. Today she is still at Millbrook but has traded in the tinsel for training!

Tracey settled in well during her temporary contract and was keen to stay when a permanent position became available. Although not from a horticultural background she was given plenty of training and soon took over the running of the Houseplant department.

A few years later and looking for a new challenge the opportunity of Assistant Manager at the Crowborough Centre came up and further training was given on a Management Development Programme. Tracey spent four years in that role before becoming Personnel & Training Manager in 2004 & was appointed as HR Director on 1st January 2008.

Lauren Pickering - from weekend girl to award winner

Whilst still at school Lauren joined Millbrook at Gravesend in 1997 as a weekend till assistant. Four years later she transferred to the plant area working two days a week whilst studying at Hadlow College, when she completed her studies she then started working full time.

As Canopy Supervisor Lauren completed the Retail Plant Area Care Award, a nationally recognised qualification as well as becoming the first person in the country to successfully complete the Horticultural Trades Association Supervisory Award.

Lauren successfully completed a Management Development Programme in the Spring of 2008 to support her further in her career & is currently the Shop Supervisor a role which fully utilises her merchandising & people management skills.
