Out and about in the garden

Prune back leafy growth from wisteria and summer flowering shrubs.  Climbing roses that are not repeat flowering can also be pruned

Encourage wildlife into the garden by planting late flowering perennials such as Crocosmia, Buddleia and Hardy Fuschias

Growing is thirsty work so make sure you feed and water your pots, hanging baskets and containers regularly.

Trim hedges - as new growth starts to make them look untidy
- they will instantly look better after a summer trim and should remain neat throughout winter!
Keep on dead heading containers to prolong flowering period, also keep well watered and feed once a week to keep plants healthy. Deadhead roses and dahlia blooms and cut back lavender too.
Keep mowing weekly but raise the mower blades in hot spells to allow the grass to retain more moisture. Cut back plants creeping over the lawn from the border and neaten up the edges of the lawn.

In the veg patch

Keep on picking summer fruits as they ripen, if you have surplus they can be made into jams or frozen

Cut back flowering herbs so that they don’t go to seed and you will get another flush of foliage.

Prune all cane fruit (except Autumn fruiting rasperries) for a bumper crop next year

Start lifting onions and shallots, they can be left on the surface to dry naturally

Put straw underneath marrows and pumpkins as they are developing to keep them off the soil as they can rot
