October is a busy time for gardening jobs and it’s great to be outside enjoying all the amazing Autumnal colours.
- Plant new shrubs and trees while the soil is still warm to allow their roots to establish. Don’t forget to stake your trees to ensure they grow straight. Stakes should be inserted on the side of the prevailing wind so the tree is blown away from the stake
- It’s not too late to plant Spring flowering bulbs, a little effort now will pay dividends in the new year
- As you’re tidying your borders, rake up fallen leaves and store them along with any prunings you may have to make compost and leaf mould for use next year
- Don’t forget to feed the birds and make sure there’s always a supply of fresh water for them when the weather gets colder
